Guest Speaker – Glenn Cooper AM

Glenn with Chair Jean

Glenn with Chair Jean

On Tuesday, February 12 we were privileged to have Glenn Cooper AM  as our guest speaker. Glenn is Chairman of Coopers Brewery, one of the State’s iconic companies.

Glenn provided an interesting, at times humorous, account of the family history and their struggle to operate a family owned brewery in the face of fierce opposition and takeover bids by multi-national companies.

That their products now have strong sales interstate as well as locally bears testament to their success.

Club back after Christmas break

Tony Pilkington with President Barry. A new ” Bazz and Pilko” ?

After a break for Christmas/New Year, the Club held its first meeting for 2019 on January 15.

Our guest speaker was media legend and fellow Rotarian Tony Pilkington. Tony rose to prominence in 1976 when he paired with Barry Ion to form the “Bazz and Pilko” team on 5AD radio station.  His  tremendous contribution to the media since then has been recognised by the general community with an award of an OAM and by his peers when he was inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame in 2011.

Tony entertained the meeting with an amusing recounting of his life as a radio announcer. We were delighted that two of the Club’s major sponsors – Dimi Kyriazis from Golden North and Andrew Gunn from ALH- were able to attend.

Carols by the Lake 2018

Crowd at this year’s Carols

This year’s Carols by the Lake was held on Sunday, December 9 at Neighbourhood Reserve, West Lakes.

A collaborative effort of our Club and the West Lakes Uniting Church, this event is in its 42nd year, an achievement of which we are justifiably proud.  A large crowd attended again this year with Santa attracting a record number of children, and the revised program gaining approval from performers and audience alike.

It would not be possible for our Club to produce this annual event without the generous support of many sponsors, including the Charles Sturt Council. The Club wishes to acknowledge these sponsors and offer our most sincere thanks.

Club starts its Christmas activities

Father Christmas at Bright Hours

Father Christmas at Bright Hours

A luncheon held on November 28 for residents of some local nursing homes was the first of a number of Christmas functions to be organised by the Club over the next few weeks. The “Bright Hours” luncheon is organised in conjunction with the West Lakes Uniting Church, and has a strong Christmas theme with the meal consisting of roast turkey followed by Christmas pudding and custard.

Father Christmas visited the luncheon and distributed small gifts, and attendees were entertained by a magician and a choir.

This event will be followed by the Club running a barbecue at a local primary school, then on December 9 the Club’s major project – Carols by the Lake.
