Understanding Dementia

27 July 2021,

Tonight RCWL ran their second Zoom meeting under the current Level 5 restrictions in South Australia. Fifteen members attended which is a little lower than normal. After the normal business session, our scheduled speaker, member Barbara gave a presentation on Dementia. This was well received by the club and as can be expected, generated a level of interest and a number of questions.

The Zoom meetings give us the opportunity to continue our service to the community, and importantly to get together and share stories. Next week we are hoping to get back to “normal” meetings at the Bartley Tavern.

National Railway Museum Annual Family Fun Fair

The Rotary Club of West Lakes is providing catering in the Cafeteria Car at the National Railway Museum for the Family Fun Fair this weekend. Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th July.

RCWL guest speaker – Roger Drake

Tonight we were proud to host Roger Drake – founder and Chairman of Drakes Supermarkets.

Roger provided insight into his upbringing, and how he moved into the service industry. From a childhood dream of becoming a doctor, earning money working in the local supermarkets of the time changed his focus.

A confessed workaholic, he has managed his “away time” through golf and sailing. He is proud of what the independents do to challenge the competition, and is fiercely loyal to his staff. He spoke passionately about recognising staff who reached service celebrations of 10, 20, 30 & 40 yrs!

Members were able to ask Roger a number of questions ranging from Drakes’ role in sustainability, their vision for the future and Drakes’ support for SA products. A past Rotarian, Roger also spoke about his company’s support of local non-profit organisations.

Rotary West Lakes (RCWL) honours past Rotarians with donation to Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club (SSLSC)

Brian Page and Max Christie were committed members of both organisations. The Rotary Club remembers them through annual donations to the Life Saving Club. SSLSC President Paul Breden provided members of RCWL with a summary of the activities undertaken in the past year 2021-07_SLSSA Sema4 Rotary Presentation.

Of particular note is their new Semaphore Seabird initiative, which provides opportunities for children with needs to be part of the normal surf life saving activities. This has been made possible through the City of Charles Sturt and RCWL working with SSLSC.

In 2021, the RCWL awardees were as follows: - Edward Hennig and Sean Kenny (Brian Page Memorial Award) - Allison Bampton and Steph Breden (Max Christie Memorial Award)

The nature of the award provides Edward, Sean, Allison and Steph with a choice of how would they like the money to be used to improve activities within the Club.
